Out!

He has not quite learned to say the words, "Go out," or "Outside" yet. But since we have been back home, he has been leading us to the door, gets his shoes, and points--communicating, he wants to go out. Our home is not very spacious and in the last two days he has been back, he has pretty much re-explored and have re-familiarized himself with our place. So, he wants to get out and he knows how to let us know! He has been "on the go" for the last month, always in new places. I wonder if he is used to that and wants to go somewhere, do something new, etc.... This week, my goal is to find some places where I can take him because he and I are both going to go stir crazy being in our small space.

Yesterday, he completely refused his afternoon nap....after fighting him for an hour, I gave up and decided that I was going to just put him down for bed early. He went down at 6pm last night. Today, I didn't even bother trying to put him down for an afternoon nap because he showed no signs of tiredness and I was sick in bed anyway... He went down a little before 6pm tonight. I think he is ready to transition to one nap a day. He seems to always prefer longer morning naps than afternoon naps.... we'll see how it all turns out.

The Yes Man!

The little guy loves to babble. The other day, I called Paul on the cellphone so that Elijah could "talk" to him. It was so cute. He was blabbing away. But, one of the words, he loves to say is "Yes." It was so cute to watch him say, "Yes.....blab blab blab, Yes. Yes." He hasn't said "No" yet! :)

My Affectionate Little Man

I am finding that Elijah is very affectionate. He often hugs his stuffed animal friends and kisses them with sheer delight. He has begun giving kisses too, which is a lot of fun and really sweet to receive and watch. Recently, he would come over and just give spontaneous kisses. We feel so loved by him. Today, Elijah was playing with a passport photo of mine. All of a sudden, he stopped playing with it; instead, he gave a big smooch on the photo and gave me a big smile afterward. It made my day.....

On a different note, I hope to slowly but surely share about Elijah's adventures in Thailand. Thank goodness for photos! Otherwise, I wouldn't know where to even begin.... More to come!

Home Sweet Home!

Dear Elijah,

Today, we returned home to India after two months away. During our two months odyssey, you moved around eight times and stayed in six different places. Through all the transitions and changes, you continued to amaze us with your flexibility. Mommy and daddy are so thankful and proud of you. We have at times wondered what it has been like for you to move from one place to another, to say good-bye frequently, and to not have a "normal" routine that most kids at your age have. In the last two months, you got to see and experience so many new things! (Mommy is going to try her best to record some of those things here in the blog for you so that you can one day look back at them.)

It was great to see you so happy today being back at home. We woke you up early at 4 am to go to the airport. You seemed to understand that we were getting on a plane. You were pretty tired by the time the plane left Bangkok and you managed to sleep for most of the flight. When we arrived in India and got inside our car, you stopped for a few seconds and seemed to remember that it was the car that you had ridden in many times. You have played in that car lots of times with daddy and it was clear that you were remembering something. Then, when we got home, you saw Sparky, our neighbor's dog, and you immediately got excited. You saw Elizabeth and seemed a little hesitant at first, but it seemed though that as we ate together, you remembered her and realized that she was the same "auntie" who came to our place to work and who ate lunch with us every day. Once that realization clicked, you got really happy and immediately began engaging with her in ways that you had done in the past. But, the most delightful part for mommy and daddy were going through our regular nightly routine with you for the first time in two months! You were so ecstatic! Somehow, you remembered our fun nightly routine at home and you were having so much fun as we went through each of the elements. Mommy and daddy really missed being able to do the whole nightly routine, although we tried our best to keep some elements of it wherever we were. We missed giving you a nightly bath, singing "naked baby man," throwing you on the bed, and playing "where is Elijah?" with the towels. But, tonight, we got to the whole routine and boy, were you excited. It was so fun for mommy and daddy to see that you had remembered and enjoyed your bedtime routine as much as we did. We are looking forward to a more regular night time routine with you at least for a few months! Welcome home, sweet son!

Toddling

Elijah has officially entered the world of "toddlers." He started taking more than just a few steps yesterday (February 19th). Something clicked and as soon as we arrived at one of Paul's friend's place in Bangkok (where we're staying for two nights), he started to walk. It has been so exciting to watch him take his steps. I have heard that once the walking thing clicks for pre-toddlers, it doesn't take very long before they can really move around on their own really well. I'm sure people in Siliguri will be so surprised to see how much he has changed just in two months when we return on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I don't have my camera with me to capture these moments, but I am sure I will have plenty of opportunities to capture them.

I have a ton of pictures to post and blog entries to write after almost a month long hiatus from the blogging world. There are a few highlights that I must write about and post pictures of.

Good bye Kathmandu, Hello Thailand!

We left Kathmandu today for Thailand. I have been telling Elijah for a few days that we will be leaving Kathmandu, getting on an airplane, and heading for a new place called Thailand. Because he has been fascinated with airplanes and has been signing it whenever he would hear a plane flying by (even while nursing), I have been telling him that he will get on one soon.

He is so much more aware of his surroundings and this time around, it felt as though he was aware that something different was happening as we packed up all our stuff. We made sure that he got to say goodbye to our neighbor who has become really fond of Elijah. Every morning they greet each other as he stands on his veranda and Elijah looks out the window. It has been really sweet to watch the two interact. I can tell that the man and his wife love being greeted by Elijah every morning with a big smile and a yell that sounds like "Hey!" And, Elijah, whenever we walk by their place, he looks up to see if they are there. Before we left, the man got to hold him and got to say good-bye. I am certain that their mornings will not feel the same.... It has been really fun to see kids calling out "Elijah, Elijah!"in front of the flat. Elijah is a people magnet.

Elijah LOVED being on the plane. He played around with the headphones (swaying his body to the music), and loved pushing all the buttons, walking up and down the aisle, taking out magazines in the seat pocket, and watching all the people around him and their busy activities. He loved it so much that he refused to take an afternoon nap, even though he was extremely tired. Through yawning, rubbing eyes, pulling on his ears, and nursing, he did not want to sleep. Dad = play while Mom = sleep, so he kept wanting to go to Paul. When we arrived at the airport, he saw the escalator and he wanted to his dad to go up and down on it. Oh boy, did he love it! I assume by now he is aware that he is leaving a place. A month is long enough to establish some sense of "home" and we were leaving again. We will see how he does with our current lifestyle as he gets older. For now, I am very grateful that he seems to be a kid who thrives on being in new places because he is so intrigued by all the new things! I am also thankful that generally he is a good sleeper wherever he goes.

On a different note, I can tell that we are getting really good at packing because each time we do it, it goes even more smoothly. Somehow we have figured out a way to make traveling a little less stressful. It is encouraging to see that we are improving and learning to make this lifestyle work with less stress.
