First Airplane Ride

Elijah went on his first plane ride from CA to CO today. He is turning out to be a great traveler. We are finding that he just loves to look around and is so intrigued by everything around him that as long as he gets to see everything, he is fine! I (his mommy) could tell that he was excited as we walked through the airport security and through the airport because he kept looking around and would talk to me. I wonder how he will do for the 48 hour trip back to India...

Two feet

I am having so much fun as a mom watching Elijah discover new things about himself. The last few days, I noticed him looking at his feet a lot as if he was studying them intently. This morning, he discovered them with his hands and were holding them. I had Paul take the photos but he couldn't quite get him to do it again when we were ready for a photo shot. I wonder when the feet will actually go into his mouth!

Well, we are still trying to figure out what is going on, but we are wondering if our dear son is starting to reject the bottle. One theory is that he just isn't as hungry the first thing in the morning because he had a feeding at 3 or 4am.... and the other theory is that he has developed a preference and no longer is interested in being fed from the bottle. Initially, I was a little sad that he was rejecting the bottle because it felt as though I would lose some freedom I felt in being able to rely on the bottle for him when I am not around. But, as I think about going back to India, maybe it will be more practical to just not bother with bottles since electricity is not as reliable and I can't rely on the fridge to work always to store my breast milk. We will test out the two theories and see if we could come to some conclusion about this new behavior.

I think the next developmental thing for Elijah might be rolling over.... he is so close to doing it. I helped him today to roll over from his back to front today and he rolled right into a tummy time position. I could tell he thought it was different and he seemed to enjoy it a lot.

One Year Anniversary

Today, a year ago, Elijah was only a four cell-embryo dividing rapidly to become what he is today. God's design is absolutely marvelous to ponder about. This is Elijah's first photo at day 3 in the petri dish before he was transferred back into my uterus as we prayed and hoped that at least one of the embryos would implant to become eventually a live human being. We thank God every day that one did and he is Elijah, our son!

Discovering Hands and Fingers

Elijah discovered that he has two hands with fingers today! For the first time, he put his two hands together and appeared fascinated by those ten long fingers that he could wiggle around. He spent a lot of the time today just looking and studying his hands and fingers....I wondered about what he was thinking about!

No more pacifier?

At 7am this morning, I woke up to a hard sucking noise in the other room. There he was, sucking on his thumb and soothing himself. He slept through the night and he was not planning to wake me up so that I could get a little more sleep... how thoughtful of Elijah! ;)

Paul and I decided that if we can, we would prefer to have him use the pacifier, instead of his thumb. Mainly, as I imagine going back to India, I felt like it would be easier to keep the pacifier clean than the thumb. Until today, the pacifier has been working great. But, all day today, he kept rejecting the pacifier (both old and new) and preferring his hand... so, who knows, maybe he will choose for all of us that he likes the hand/thumb/fingers better! I'll try again tomorrow and see if he will accept the pacifier. Elijah first found his thumb on March 1, 2009 at church.

Today, he weighed 13 pounds and 7 ounces at 14 weeks old. I swear, he knows when we're playing because I started this little game saying, "Are you gonna eat mama?" and he would open his mouth wide, push his head forward, and lean in to give me a big wet kiss and laugh! I love it!!

People have told me that around month 3, you really start to get into a groove with being a new mom, and I am starting to find that it is kind of true. My body feels much more adjusted to his feeding needs, I am starting to read his cues better, nursing no longer feels like work, and I get to enjoy watching his little personality develop more. I wonder what 4 months will be like?

Growing up

Today, I packed away all of Elijah's 0-3 months clothes. He grew out of his 0-3 month old clothes while we were up north and I had to purchase a few 3=6 month old clothes to tie us over while we were there. He is definitely not a new born. It is amazing how quickly they grow...Elijah turned three months old old on April 8th and this stage is a lot of fun. He is so alert, is able to squeal, laugh, and coo, and is so interactive. One new thing he has begun to do is sing with me when I am singing.... it is the cutest thing to watch and hear.

For the first time, he took the rattle to his mouth this morning.... I wonder if this is the beginnings of many more explorations using the mouth.

While we were in northern California the past three weeks, he was a trooper as we took him from one gathering to the next, meeting new people, and being passed around like a hot potato. However, now that we are back in LA, I have been thinking about trying to see if we could get him into some kind of a regular schedule. He did great today taking regular naps in his pack n play and was in good mood. I started writing down his play and nap times to see if I can see a natural pattern to his schedule....I think he definitely has one. I've been also thinking about whether I need to sleep train him, but I don't know if it is necessary because he already goes down for bed by 8pm and wakes up only once for a feeding or sleeps through the night... does this mean that he is already sleep trained? I was thinking that I would want to work on his naps but today, he did great. As soon as I saw that he was tired and drowsy, I put him down in his crib and he would go right down to sleep.... I'll see how he does next few days.

As I put him down to sleep for the night, it occurred to me how much he had grown just in three weeks...now, he goes down for sleep without being rocked, he has to sleep horizontally because he is too long the other way, and I often feel like he is communicating to me with words (coos) more than cries. He is a sweet little man and I thank God everyday for him.
